“Our Movement” was created in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, and is meant to invoke joy, empowerment, and cultural celebration. Standing at 20 feet tall a woman dances her way from being a modern woman into her ancestral roots. Located on one of the most historic buildings in the Oakland skyline, The Tribune Tower, this mural can’t be missed.

“Our Liberation” was painted during the heat of uprisings in Oakland in 2020 and is truly a piece meant to fuel the movement. Recreating Delacroix’s famous painting “Liberty Leads the People” of the French Revolution, I replaced his characters with Oakland artists and activists. Yanni Brump, on the left, is a non-binary trans fashion designer and activist, pictured charging forward with their fist raised. Stoney Creation, a musician, DJ, and healer, is illustrated with her arm outstretched, inviting you into this new world we are creating.

“She Will Rise” was commissioned by Demand Justice, an organization fighting for equality and representation within the Supreme Court System. I created this vision of different kinds of black women who could step into this role, and along the bottom…

”Women of the Black Panther Party” mural is based on the vision of the homeowner, who dedicated her house to the women of The Black Panther Party. The characters are based on photographs by Stephen Shames who captured images of the Party through the 60’s and 70’s. The sunburst in the background is an ode to Emory Douglass the artist for the Black Panther newspaper. On the right small white text forms the background, where 250+ names of Panther women exist as a living record of these women.

“The Alchemist” is an abstract representation of transformation both within ourselves and in the world at large. Ancient text reads from right to left, and so does this mural. We begin on the right with the character gazing directly at you. Moving to the left a transformation occurs through the elements of water air fire and ether, and she emerges dripping in liquid gold.

“Our Movement II” is a celebration of youth, dance, culture, resilience, and joy. This was installed at 836M Gallery in San Francisco to beautify the office space.

“Defense” is soft and beautiful yet intimidating. It speaks to the nature of being a woman and how our sexuality is weaponized against us, forcing us into situations where we often feel we must be aggressive or protective to remain safe in our bodies.

“Deeply Rooted” speaks to our wild essence and walks the boundary between modern Oakland culture, ancestry, and nature. I painted my friend Montee, a non-binary artist, activist, and life-long resident of Oakland. I believe it’s important to celebrate people while they are here, not just memorializing them after death. Centering imagery of a non-binary person juxtaposed with street culture is something we don’t often see. Still, it is crucial in re-writing the narrow views we hold around gender and culture.

“Bloom” was created for Betti Ono Gallery to honor black women. I painted a good friend of mine and fellow artist, Zoe Addiah Boston, who has seen some of the darkest times and yes continues to heal herself, flourish, and blossom. Bloom is a testament to the beauty, resilience, and spirit of black women.
